Tips on What to Wear for Spring Family Photoshoots

The No.1 question from parents who have booked up for a family photo session is around clothing, “What do we wear and what about colours?”. With Spring just around the corner, I thought it might be helpful to share some tips around the type of clothing that works well and colours I often recommend to families.

Wearing the right clothing can make a significant difference to the outcome of your family photographs. The more you compliment each other the more your image flows and your clothing will also compliment the outdoor background colours too.

I always guide families to plan their clothing as a family unit. A tip is to lay your clothes out the night before your photo session either on a bed or a surface with your tops all the way down to shoes. Take a step back and look at how your colours work with each other. If any clothing stands out and doesn’t work for you, whether it be a pattern or a colour, the same will happen when you look at your photograph. I often advise parents to avoid clothing with large writing, logos or loud patterns, these can be a little distracting. It’s about finding clothing options that work together vs distract.

The most dominant outdoor colour in Spring is green. Below are some colour palettes with a Spring-Green in each one and different colour options which are complimentary. There are many options however, I often find that keeping your colour palette to a mix of neutrals (top) and shades of pastel colours (bottom) keeps your look fresh and classic in the Spring time.

Spring Colour Palette Options

Below are also some clothing/colour options that work well for girls. These are just examples, it is important to wear clothing that you feel comfortable in and reflects your own style. I also encourage parents to have their children involved in picking their outfits for the session, it helps build a little excitement beforehand.

Some clothing/colour options that work well for boys. Again these are just examples. If parents wish to bring outfit changes for the children I also encourage this and it ensures you have a little variety in the children’s clothing across your photo gallery.

Another tip is to think about the textures of your clothes too.  Denim, knits or even a hat can add interest to your photograph.

I also have a Pinterest board with many more options to look through for some inspiration :-).
